Professor and Director of the Department of Sciences of the Health of the Public University of Navarra. Professor of the Master in High Performance Sports of the Spanish Olympic Committee.
He has directed a large number of research projects in the field of Biomechanics and Neuromuscular system, with special interest in the study of the effects of the strength training and muscle power in various sports, aging, fragility, special populations (diabetes and obesity) and muscular performance.
Currently participates as a researcher in the Spanish Network of Aging and Fragility (RETICEF) of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, in the “Mid-Frail” study funded by the European Commission (FP7) and coordinates the European VIVIFRAIL project in the program Erasmus +. It currently belongs to the Cyber of fragility and healthy aging.
He has directed more than 20 doctoral dissertations in the field of physical activity and he has published more than 200 articles indexed in the JCR with more than 6000 citations. Factor H (12 years): 35 (35 items cited 35 or more times).

The overwhelming scientific evidence that physical activity improves the health of the population increasingly is greater. Physical exercise has a significant role, in some cases comparable or superior to medication, in the prevention and treatment of more than forty chronic non-communicable diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, depression, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, osteoporosis and heart attacks.
This protective effect of exercise, charged even if it should be more important in preserving functional decline of older individuals, focusing on the improvement of its intrinsic capacity.
Currently most exercise programs have been designed standardized people in general, controlling only the intensity of the effort, a sort of coffee for everyone, which does not consider the differences between individuals.
It has recently been observed in different research studies the substantial variations in the response in the body of patients with physical activity. Recent studies on inter-individual variation in response to physical exercise, involve, to the same stimulation, some people get benefits, while others do not get them
In the future, the need to integrate the personalized physical activity and your prescription will become more and more important, with specific recommendations tailored to the biological characteristics of each individual, as in the case of medicines, as part of that personalized medicine, which takes into account the genetic characteristics of style of life and environmental circumstances.
The prescription of physical exercise should be individualized according to the functional capabilities of the person and with specific recommendations on the dose – intensity, volume and frequency-, similar to what happens with drugs.
